Acres to Square Feet

Acres to square feet: multiply by 43,560, since one acre is exactly 43,560 sq ft, the area of a square about 208.7 ft on each side. Half an acre is 21,780 sq ft and a quarter acre is 10,890 sq ft.

How many square feet are in an acre?

Exactly 43,560. The tables of US units in NIST Handbook 44 give one acre as 43,560 square feet, so the conversion is a single multiplication:

square feet = acres × 43,560

For a 2.5-acre parcel, 2.5 × 43,560 = 108,900 sq ft. The converter does this as you type and also shows square yards, square meters and hectares. Its Swap button runs the conversion from square feet to acres.

How big is an acre?

An acre is an amount of area with no fixed shape. A square, a long strip and a circle all count as one acre if they cover 43,560 sq ft, and the table gives the dimensions for several shapes:

Shapes that each make one acre
ShapeDimensions
Square208.7 × 208.7 ft
Near-square rectangle200 × 217.8 ft
Rectangle150 × 290.4 ft
Long rectangle100 × 435.6 ft
Strip66 × 660 ft
Narrow strip50 × 871.2 ft
Circle235.5 ft across

The square is the easiest to picture: just under 70 yards along each side. To check whether a plot is an acre, multiply its length by its width in feet and compare the result with 43,560.

Fractions of an acre

When a lot is described as a fraction of an acre, this table turns it into square feet. The last column shows the side of a square with that area, which shrinks more slowly than the area does. As a square, half an acre is 147.6 ft on a side, about 71% of the full acre’s 208.7 ft, and a quarter acre is exactly half as wide.

Decimal acres and rounding

An acreage written to two decimal places hides a fair amount of ground, because each hundredth of an acre is 435.6 sq ft. A lot listed at 0.17 acres could be anything from about 7,187 to 7,623 sq ft, since every value from 0.165 to 0.175 rounds to 0.17. Multiplying 0.17 by 43,560 gives 7,405 sq ft, the middle of that span. For a fence, sod or seed order, work from the measured sides of the lot rather than the rounded acreage.

Acres to square yards, square meters and hectares

A square yard is 9 sq ft, so an acre is 43,560 ÷ 9 = 4,840 square yards. For metric units, the international foot is exactly 0.3048 m, which makes a square foot 0.09290304 m². An acre is therefore 4,046.86 m², or 0.405 hectares, and a hectare (10,000 m²) is 2.471 acres or 107,639 sq ft. The converter lists all three alongside every result. To go from a square footage back to acres, with lot-size examples and the median US lot, use the square feet to acres converter.
