Square Feet to Acres
Square feet to acres: divide by 43,560, the number of square feet in one acre. A 10,000 sq ft lot is 0.23 acres, and the median lot of a new US single-family house sold in 2025 was 8,307 sq ft, or 0.19 acres.
Example: 10,000 square feet
0.23 acres
- 1,111 sq yd
- 929 m²
- 0.093 hectares
How to convert square feet to acres
Divide square feet by 43,560:
acres = square feet ÷ 43,560
An acre is defined as exactly 43,560 sq ft in NIST Handbook 44’s unit tables, so the factor never needs rounding. A listing or plat may give a lot as width × depth. Take a lot listed as 75 × 140 ft: 75 × 140 = 10,500 sq ft, and 10,500 ÷ 43,560 = 0.241 acres. That’s just under a quarter acre, which is 10,890 sq ft.
The converter divides as you type and also gives the area in square yards, square meters and hectares. Press Swap to go from acres to square feet instead.

Lot size: length × width to acres
The converter takes square feet, so measure or look up the lot’s sides first. For a rectangle, multiply width by depth:
- 50 × 100 ft is 5,000 sq ft, or 0.115 acres.
- 200 × 200 ft is 40,000 sq ft, or 0.918 acres, which is 3,560 sq ft short of an acre.
- 300 × 600 ft is 180,000 sq ft, or 4.13 acres.
If the lot isn’t a rectangle, split the outline into rectangles and right triangles, find each area, and add them. A triangle’s area is its base × height ÷ 2. A lot made of a 120 × 150 ft rectangle with a triangular corner 120 ft along the base and 40 ft deep is 18,000 + 2,400 = 20,400 sq ft, or 0.468 acres. A property survey or plat shows the boundary lengths you need, and your county’s property record may already list the area.
The lot also takes in the house, driveway and any paved areas, so measure the part you’re actually planting or covering before you order material.
How big is a typical US lot?
The US Census Bureau’s Characteristics of New Housing survey records the lot size of new single-family houses sold each year. In 2025 the median was 8,307 sq ft, or 0.19 acres, up from 8,021 sq ft in 2024. For detached houses alone it was 8,543 sq ft, or 0.196 acres. The median varies a lot by region:
| Region | Square feet | Acres |
|---|---|---|
| Northeast | 11,107 | 0.255 |
| Midwest | 8,752 | 0.201 |
| South | 8,543 | 0.196 |
| West | 5,969 | 0.137 |
| United States | 8,307 | 0.191 |
So a quarter-acre lot is larger than the typical new-home lot everywhere except the Northeast, and a Western new-home lot is closer to an eighth of an acre. These figures cover only newly built houses sold that year, so lots in an older neighborhood can be quite different.
Per acre or per 1,000 sq ft
Seed, fertilizer and lime directions may give a rate per 1,000 sq ft or per acre. An acre is 43.56 thousand square feet, so a rate per 1,000 sq ft × 43.56 gives the rate per acre, and a rate per acre ÷ 43.56 gives it per 1,000 sq ft. One pound per 1,000 sq ft is 43.56 lb per acre.
Bulk material for spreading has its own rate per area: covering any area 1 inch deep takes 3.09 cubic yards per 1,000 sq ft, so a 5,000 sq ft lawn top-dressed an inch deep needs 15.43 cubic yards. The square feet to cubic yards converter works it out for any depth, and the acres to square feet converter goes the other way, with fractions of an acre and the shape of one in feet.
Questions people ask
How many square feet are in an acre?
43,560, by definition. That makes 87,120 sq ft two acres and 4,356 sq ft a tenth of an acre; for anything in between, divide the square feet by 43,560.
How many acres is 10,000 square feet?
0.23 acres (10,000 ÷ 43,560 = 0.2296). That's a little under a quarter acre, which is 10,890 sq ft, and larger than the 8,307 sq ft median lot for new US houses sold in 2025.
How do I calculate the acreage of my lot?
Multiply the lot's width by its depth in feet, then divide by 43,560. A lot 75 ft wide and 140 ft deep is 10,500 sq ft, or 0.241 acres. For an odd shape, split it into rectangles and triangles, add up their areas, then divide.
Is 200 ft by 200 ft an acre?
No. A 200 × 200 ft square is 40,000 sq ft, or 0.918 acres, which leaves it 3,560 sq ft short of a full acre.
How many acres is 300 ft by 600 ft?
4.13 acres. The area is 300 × 600 = 180,000 sq ft, and 180,000 ÷ 43,560 = 4.132.
How many acres is 5,000 square feet?
0.115 acres. A 50 × 100 ft lot is 5,000 sq ft, a little over a ninth of an acre.
What is the average lot size for a new house in the US?
The US Census Bureau puts the median lot of new single-family houses sold in 2025 at 8,307 sq ft, about 0.19 acres. Counting detached houses only, the median was 8,543 sq ft, or 0.196 acres.
